Company History

Keithley Instruments has more than a half-century of experience in pushing out the boundaries of measurement science. Founded by Joseph F. Keithley in 1946 in a small workshop in Cleveland, Ohio, Keithley Instruments has consistently led the industry in the development of innovative electronic test and measurement and data acquisition solutions for engineers and scientists.

The test and measurement industry recognized Mr. Keithley's leadership and engineering expertise with numerous awards in his lifetime, including election to the National Academy of Engineering's Hall of Fame. In recognition of the quality, reliability, and innovative technology of Keithley products, the Company has received the State of Ohio's prestigious Edison Award. Keithley products have been recognized with the R and D 100 Award 17 times and two of the Company's instruments were further recognized as being among the most significant test and measurement products of the last 40 years.

In the early decades, the Company's products were designed to address the needs of physicists and space scientists, who came to depend on Keithley's expertise in ultra-low-level measurement. As the world's demand for semiconductors, automobiles, and consumer electronics grew and new manufacturing technologies were invented, a growing number of production test engineers began turning to Keithley for fast, accurate production test solutions. Keithley engineers have built on the Company's core competency in low-level measurement and applied it to high-volume production test applications in high-growth sectors such as telecommunications and wireless devices, electronic components production, semiconductors, factory automation, and optoelectronics. By helping manufacturers resolve the testing issues associated with the rapid technological change in fledgling industries and the continuous evolution of existing ones, Keithley has grown to become a world leader in test technology development. Keithley fuels its product innovation efforts by spending approximately ten percent of annual sales on new product development.

As demand for the Company's solutions has grown, Keithley has expanded to serve customers worldwide, operating direct sales and support offices in 13 countries and providing sales representatives in more than 80 countries. Today, engineers and scientists around the world depend on Keithley instruments to help them make better, faster, more cost-effective measurements at each stage of the product research, development, and manufacturing process.
